The Curriculum for Wales guidance has been recently introduced to help schools in Wales develop their own curriculum, providing a framework that is designed to help learners achieve the four purposes of the curriculum. These purposes are the starting point for every child and young person in Wales and are:
Developing ambitious, capable learners
Creating healthy, confident individuals
Building enterprising, creative contributors
Responsible, ethical citizens
The guidance is intended to ensure that all schools in Wales cover the same core learning, while also providing the flexibility to develop a curriculum that meets the specific needs of their learners. In addition to schools, the guidance is also relevant to other settings responsible for the provision of education, such as nurseries, PRUs, and EOTAS.
The guidance sets out the curriculum requirements set out in legislation for learners aged 3 to 16, as well as guidelines for schools in developing their curricula. This includes expectations around assessment arrangements to support learner progression.
The Curriculum for Wales guidance represents an exciting new direction for education in Wales, providing schools with the opportunity to develop curricula that are tailored to the needs of their learners. By providing a consistent framework for learning and assessment, the guidance ensures that all learners have access to high-quality education that enables them to achieve their full potential. It is a positive step towards creating a more equitable education system that supports learners in developing the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.
